Ubuntu began in 2015 after a trip to Haiti where I met and fell in love with the children at Gertrude’s Orphanage in Port Au Prince, Haiti. Many of the children at Gertrude’s are mentally or physically disabled, but their joy is contagious and their love is infectious. Upon returning to NYC, where I had recently moved to pursue a career in fashion design, I wanted desperately to give back to these children. That was the beginning of Ubuntu.
Ubuntu is a Zulu word and philosophy that is translated to “I am because we are” or “human kindness”. It is the belief that we are all connected by our humanity and we should love each other as such. The brand started with a small group of tassel bracelets to raise money for one child monthly and has expanded to a full collection that currently sponsors five children monthly and works to create back to school scholarships for a group of youth in Queens by donating 15% of all profits.
Ubuntu is dedicated to finding the most beautiful gemstones and semi precious stones to create effortless jewelry that can be worn by women of any age. The line is consistently inspired by nature, especially the ocean, vibrant colors, and cultures from around the world. Our mission is to create a lifestyle of giving that can change the world.
